The difference 7 years makes. If only AMD didn’t make the Ryzen 3900 OEM bulk only, it could’ve been 12C24T, but then I wouldn’t know what to do with all that raw power. Heck I don’t even know why I need this, lol.
I wonder what will Intel respond to AMD with. They did a heck of a job with Sandy/Ivy Bridge but right now they are devastated by Zen.

Update : Welp... it’s out with the new and in with the old. MSI pushed me a BIOS update, and it bricked the machine. Board’s back out and ticket opened with them. Hopefully they will give me a brand new board instead of a refurbished one since it’s only a day old...

My AMD 8 core is aging. 7 years as well. I don't know much about PC's though. Can you just replace the processor or do you have to essentially replaceme the PC?

I’m going to assume you have an AMD FX, which is like an AM3. The current socket is AM4 since the memory standards moved on so it’s not pin compatible. You’ll need a whole new setup.

Depends on your socket. If it’s a modern socket you can just swap it out. But based on the age you said I’d guess it’s an FX series processor, which means you’d need to do CPU + Motherboard + RAM .
There’s a lot of good deals right now on AMD stuff. You can get a Ryzen 1600 (a couple years old, but still great) for $85. Add in a similarly priced MoBo and 16gigs of RAM and you have a refreshed machine for just over $200 (USD).

I honestly don’t know what to do with all the power of my 3900x other than crushing benchmarks. I’m sure 5 years from now it will finally start seeing more than 20% load in gaming.
12th gen at the earliest is when Intel is going to be able to start trying to catch AMD. It’s going to get uglier for Intel than it already is.

AMD is pretty good with keeping the same CPU socket around for many years, but they just recently moved from AM3 to AM4 like 2 years ago, so if you want Ryzen, you’re gonna need an AM4 board and DDR4 memory. Basically yeah, new PC.
On the plus side, AM4 will probably be around till 2025.

He did say it’s 7 years old. The first processor use AM4 was the Excavator, which was back in 2014.

Oof yeah, that’s tough. Personally I’d wait till AM4+ or whatever they call it comes out I read something that said the Ryzen 5XXX series processors will be on an updated socket.

AM4 is being replaced with after the next generation of Ryzen processors.

Can confirm, 5xxx series Ryzen processors are going to be on a new socket.

Uh oh, I have an MSI board in my build. Looks like I won’t be flashing any BIOSes anytime soon.
Full of the sound of the Gran Fury, signifying nothing.

I have a machine that would have been a fantastic workstation 5-6 years ago (8-core/16 thread Xeon, 64GB ECC RAM, 2TB of SSDS, FirePro W7000), yet it spends its days running in the background, downloading a few files and acting as a secondary Plex server. It could probably still handled plenty of workstation tasks, but I really don't have any for it...

I did a further search on Reddit and MSI’s forums... apparently this is pretty common for their B450 boards.
Crutching my fist against Buildzoid right now for recommending all the MSI boards...

Ouch. Sort of shocked everyone doesn’t have some sort of dual bios solution these days (though now that I look, my MSI board doesn’t have that either). It has been almost 20 years since I’ve had a BIOS go bad (swapping BIOS chips from running PCs, fun!) , so maybe things are more reliable now.
I’d guess you’ll get a refurb going through MSI. If you want a new one, I’d just see about returning it to the vendor as defective?

BIOS stuff is one of the main reasons I'm really scared to build a PC.

It’s really not very scary. Generally there’s no need to flash the BIOS if it’s working, so you can basically ignore that risk unless you have to be on the bleeding edge (There’s been more updates than normal the past couple years to Spectre/Meltdown fixes, but the OS also applies those fixes at boot, so they really aren’t critical updates for the BIOS).

The only problem I’ve had with mine (Z370, so a bit of a different animal), was that the Bluetooth stopped working around a year ago. MSI wanted me to reinstall W indows, which is sort of heavy troubleshooting. I didn’t want to lose the computer then so I ran with an external dongle for a couple months, and then the BT started working again, and has worked since. Maybe it was really a software thing, though I have no reason to suspect that either.
BIOS updates have gone fine except that it’s annoying that they don’t make any effort to load saved overclock and fan curve settings between updates, they just mark them as incompatible and move on.

Luckily the retailer and MSI Canada are just a block away from each other. I have the RMA Authorization open with MSI right now but it’ll waste me an afternoon away from work since they are only open 9-5 uptown...

I had a reason to do mine, since the BIOS that bricked my board supposedly has the AMD ComboPI updates (1.0.0.4 Patch B) I needed to improve my thermals and boosting, which was important for my ITX build.

Interesting, I went X570 for my build and everyone’s X570 BIOS’ were a mess for the first few months of the platform.
